I Spy with my Little Eye....

hmm not 100% sure about this. I think the muzzle looks funny because its not shaded, hoping that colouring will fix the odd issues. I think I'm going to get rid of the foreleg as it makes the head look really large, like the head is coming at the viewer. But then if I get rid of the leg, its a giant floating head :p His nostrils are really bugging me but I do know that is because there is no shading.

I think today was just one of those days where I just couldn't seem to draw anything the way I wanted.

Going to leave this until tomorrow and if I still have these huge problems I think I will just end up griding the whole picture and starting again. Some people might think that its cheating but there are sometimes drawings where you need the help to get things to line up properly.

Posting such a rough drawing with many problems use to bug me a lot. But posting drawings like this helps me more then posting ones that I don't think have problems. Easier to see whats wrong with a piece the more eyes you have to look at it. I'm always open for critiques with my art, helps me figure things out and get better ideas on how to do something.

  1. I think when you color in all of the harness the head won't look that large. It's really quite good!
Like you, I notice things more when I photograph my work as I go along.

Look at that lucky bird making it's home in a bird feed store. He's no dummy!

  2. I think it's great. So much better than I could do. The birds are so funny. They eat the food at the Home Depot and Lowes and fly all over the store.

  3. Clever bird!

At the moment, I'm feeling like the horse's muzzle from the cheek down to, and including, the nostril area looks a fraction too wide....but, as you say, shadowing may correct it. I think the harness will be fine once it's coloured in. Personally, I think you need to keep the legs and partial side of body to avoid the 'floating' head look. Are you planning to fade the body out so there's no strong definition? The angle of the right leg looks a little off to me. All in all though, I think it's lookin' pretty darned good ~ :)

Don't listen to those who say it's cheating to use a grid...many artists use grids for accuracy and even some of Da Vinci's drawings show gridlines. If you feel better and more confident working with a grid, go right ahead and do it....particularly for animals.

Haha love the I SPY shot!

I think the sketch is looking great, I like the 'embellishment' on its head... I do quite like the idea of a floating head!

  6. I notice when I draw that until the shading gets in, it doesn't look right to me. I think you've got this and just keep going.

Can't wait to see it finished or watch you while you go along...

I have no advice, because number one I don't know a thing about gridding... and to me it looks fine.

  8. Sometimes, if I can't work out what's wrong with a drawing (not that I think there's anything wrong with yours...) I put it in front of a mirror. If there is anything wrong with scale or proportion etc., it will immediately become obvious in the mirror image. Conversely, if it's ok, and you're fretting over nothing, it will look fine in the mirror andyou can stop worrying about it and go and get a cup of tea :)

    Try it!

  9. It's never cheating to use a grid, although it never works for me. Helena's mirror idea works for me quite well though.
I can't quite tell if the bird is a pidgeon or a dove.

  10. thanks for the comments everyone :D

Linda-not a dummy when it comes to food but he wouldn't get out and kept freaking people out :/

    thanks Carla :)

Serena- yeah that part was too wide, really noticed it when I decided to grid it. I am going to fade the body out, I thought having the body too defined might be a bit distracting

    thanks nuvonova :)

thanks tina :) did you manage to get twitter on your blog?

    thanks Sandy :)

lol dilly :D nice to have another dragon around

helena- the mirror trick works well, don't have one on the wall at the moment now :/

It was a pigeon, a wood pigeon we think. Big thing and they are all right to eat I've been told

  11. Yes, like you, I'm thinking the body and legs need to be there to avoid the 'floating head' look and fading them out would work very well.
