Quack

Actually wait a minute. I don't think swans quack :p

2 hours later, the swan has a bill and a hint of a head. Love using coloured paper, so much eaiser to work when you have a basic tonal value already there. I have had people tell me that its cheating using coloured paper when using coloured pencils. I don't get that, because its no different from painting a canvas to get a base colour. And looking at a bright white piece of paper can actually be intimidating, afraid to make a mark on the bright paper in case you mess up.

  1. They honk. And then paddle your head with their big feet if you get too close to their babies (anything less then 100ft). Just ask my dog.

Great start, looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

  2. Cheating? That's daft. IMHO.

  3. I dislike how some artists lay down so many judgements. I don't see it as cheating at all to use a different colour for base paper. As you said, canvasses are painted to get a base colour at times. Nothing wrong with it at all. :)

    1. i think there are some artists that try to be too "traditional" not realizing that a lot of the time the old masters would usse anything to make their job easier

  4. It's looking very swan-like already. The swans over here in Australia are black with red beaks.

  5. Sometimes I think its harder to use a coloured base (particularly a strong coloured one like this) as colours distort and you have to compensate - which is an art in itself (excuse the pun).

    1. you do need to use different colours then what you would use on white paper, but i like the challenge :)

  6. I don't think coloured paper is cheating, I think it is clever and creative. Swans are actually quite scary and they want to nip Lorelai Gilmore the nose. Evil swans I say.
